CLASSES AT THE CENTRE

Six-week Meditation course with Alistair Blair

Orange dawn, a seagull’s cry

 Tuesdays @ 7pm

 9 April to 14 May

A back-to-basics course where we’ll go over posture, a few methods for stabilizing the mind and understanding why meditation and mindfulness are necessary in a world of turbulence and anxiety.

“In order to meditate, it is very important to first identify what we are meditating on. If we meditate without identifying that, there is the danger it will become idiot meditation or idiot Dharma. If we do not first fully comprehend through listening and contemplating the meaning of what we are meditating on, how can we practice?”  17th Karmapa

Cost: Members: no cost; non-members R60 per evening

Beginner’s Meditation course with Andrew Steyn

Thursdays @ 7pm

Starting 11 April

The way of understanding demands study, listening, and meditation.

The Foundational aspects of the Buddhist teachings will be looked at, including the Four Noble Truths. This will form the context for our practice and help to set motivation.

We will reflect on the nature of our lives, creating an incentive to look more deeply, using the arts of listening, enquiry and meditation as our means.

My hope is that this will deepen our understanding of meditation and how to proceed, as we continue on the path.

Cost: Members: no cost; non-members R60 per evening

We engage with three books published by Tibetan Buddhist lamas and teachers in the early 21st century. Each presents transcripts of public lectures given by very experienced teachers. Each set of lectures explores how we can live modern lives that are sane and grounded (Lama Yeshe), joyful (Mingyur Rinpoche), and beautiful (Pema Chodron). They propose that we begin with a different premise: confidence in our Buddha Nature. Then, they all suggest, Tibetan Buddhism can offer energy, inspiration and wisdom: a “living dharma”.

Our hour-long sessions feature meditation, reading and metta in that order. No previous experience of Buddhism or meditation is necessary.

Texts: 2001 Lama Yeshe Losal, Living Dharma (Scotland: Kagyu Samye Ling); 2007 Mingyur Rinpoche, The Joy of Living (New York: Three Rivers Press); 2012 Pema Chodron, Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change (Boston: Shambala Publications)

Cost: Non-members R60, Members no cost.
